my name is Mike from north Wales, I was part of the team that built the Jack Ryan in 2000 in Belfast.
I always regard the Glo-Mar Jack Rryan as 'my ship' and I love her.

I am pleased to see that she is a hard working and successful ship.

My deepest wish would be to visit her sometime. God bless her and all who sail in her.

Hiya, my name is Neil. I'm from Belfast and I served my time in Harland and Wolff. The Jack Ryan was the first ship I worked on as a tradesman so she'll always be my ship. Sorry mike!

Wow, my name is John Connor S. Ryan, Jack Ryan was my father. He died when I was 9 and I see this ship as something he left behind for himself and for my family. He was an amazing man, and I am so thankful for every man who worked on building it and who has worked on it. God bless

I was one of the Scottish contingent that worked on Jack Ryan and CR Luigs..... I will never, as long as I live, forget my time in Belfast :) And just to clear up any mis-understanding,They are both MY ships, but Ill let you blokes share lol

I sailed from Cape Town, RSA to Dampier, Western Australia on her in 2002. Performed a survey of all her lifting gear in readiness for her first job in Aussie waters.

3 died 30th July, on the Jack Ryan. It resulted from a pedestal crane boom failure during load testing. Two bodies recovered. May God Rest their souls.

[Editor's note: various news stories out there - it certainly seems there has been an accident which has led to loss of life, though it may be that 2 of the 3 thrown overboard were rescued]

"The rig I am on in Nigeria, the Jack Ryan, today just had a major disaster. I was watching as it happened, they were load testing the port aft crane when the crane boom snapped! Also ripping the crane cab to bits, throwing the crane op and the ET around a 100ft to the sea below. Seen the poor buggers falling - they were lucky it wasnt the deck cause it was close. Also the lad who was supervising the load testing is missing, i.e dead, the ET is in a serious state, the crane op is hurt but looks like he will make it. It took Transocean fannies 15 MIN TO LAUNCH THE FRC BOAT. The small crane/hoist was spewing oil and wouldn't lower! And over an hour to get a full muster."

Yahoo! News 2/8/10: "An accident on an oil ship operating in a Total field off Nigeria's coast threw three workers overboard and one remained missing on Monday, company officials said."

"The accident occurred on Saturday when a crane collapsed on the Jack Ryan drill ship in the Akpo offshore field, officials from French company Total said on condition of anonymity."

"Two of the three workers were rescued after being thrown overboard."

"Production was temporarily shut down on the Transocean ship, but has since been restarted, one of the officials said. The cause of the accident was unclear."

I am EMMANUEL UTUEDOR. I was a roughneck in Jack Ryan AKPO oil field in Nigeria, sure the rig is home after home, God bless Mr Jacob Sule who gave me safety advice, for me working there two years without injury or voilation.

I was an ET on the Jack Ryan, I joined the ship in Cape Town and sailed to Western Australia many years ago, I now work at Pacific Drilling and crew changed on Friday 10th Feb, were we landed on the Jack Ryan to drop some lads off.

Hi , my name is George Ryan a brother of the late Jack Ryan. I want to thank all the men and woman involved in building this. Jack was a wonderful brother and I miss him very much. Last month was the 13th anniversary of his passing. This, for me is my first comment on this site, but look forward to visiting more often. I served my apprenticeship in Harland and Wolff as a steelworker and welder, I worked on the Jack Ryan and its sister ship. It's nice to see she's still doing her job.

I worked on the Jack Ryan in Galveston to commission the ship in 2001. I worked as a floor hand. I also sailed to Trinidad from Galveston. It was truly pleasure working with the crew on board.

No way mike, she's mine lol.. Only messing. If truth be told we were all hers and I don, t the ship, I mean the yard. I still think about my days there. Best times of my life and makes proud every day to say I'm from belfast and worked and served my time in H&W. Made some great friends who I still bother with to this day. The yard made my transission from boy to man.
Sorry to hear there was tragedy on the ship. May they RIP
AS for the ship herself, she'll always have a place in my heart till the day I die

I was there as a mate when the pedestal crane came down. I was in the FRC when we picked up the casualties which bath fully recovered with minor injuries, unfortunately there was 1 fatality, but just to put the facts right there were not 3.

Transocean has announced the GSF Jack Ryan is to be sent to scrap. She was well engineered for her time and well built. Like her namesake gone far too soon.
