Any ideas?

Editor says: Alan left us this photo, but without any info. Looks like if might be a salvaged floatation tank following the installation of a jacket.

It's from one of the BP Forties platforms built at Nigg.

Looking that Battered and the picture being 1975 must be from Highland One as Highland Two was probably still in Nigg

The sphere is from Highlands One (Forties C)and it imploded due to water pressure near the seabed during the jacket crash dive. It was later blamed on misaligned interior beams that caused it not to be perfectly spherical. Fortunately this did not affect the setting of the platform on the seabed, but the air bubble released caused the men in dinghies on the surface a few heart stopping moments.

Yes agreed it was Highland 1 -the first Forties platform built at Nigg. the same photo appears in Offshore Pioneers: the Brown and Root history, where it says it was due to imperfect sphericity - interior beams were misaligned.

it was a floatation sphere to stabilse the decent of the jacket as it rotated on the flaotation tank. the sphere was made at HDW in Hamburg and brought to Nigg about Xmas 1974 for attachment to the jacket in the graving dock. At the same time the small steel platforms( Dolphins) to secure the dry dock gate were installed
