Nigg 1974 East Ball

Wonder that smashed ball in the other picture is this one I was working on. I was on the one to the East on the Nigg Site in 1974.

There was a bad setup and they were trying to jack the two halves of a joint together.
I was the welder sent to weld the lugs on for the jack to push against.
I was sitting on the main platform watching to see if my handy work held while the fabricators worked away at a 50ish ton jack.

After a while there was a loud bang When a nearby (half finished I think) weld decided the strain was a bit much.

All the men on the scaffolding around the ball left in a hurry, like when you poke an ant nest with a stick.

The graph thing in the foreground is showing the progress of the heat treatment of one (or some) of the welds I think there was a bloke standing by it to make sure it registered hot enough even if it wasn't. That is what he told me whatever,
